The feathered population of Cape Cod is increasing by approximately 100. My parents are raising roughly 100 baby Quail that will be cared for until they are around 5 weeks old, at which point they will be released into the "wild" and left on their own to grow and (hopefully) repopulate the area.
Maya and Sadie think the chicks are the greatest things ever.
These little cuties are almost two weeks old now. You can hear them peeping as you approach their outdoor incubator, and they scuttle about excitedly in anticipation of their breakfast.
We carefully handle the little peepers while they are still tiny. The girls are not brave enough to reach into the enclosure to pet them, so Mama or Nan or Gramp scoop one up and allow the ladies to gently pet them. After a few minutes of visiting, we close up the incubator and allow the peeping to continue uninterrupted.
The raising of these quail is part of a larger project that has been going on for several years. We are fortunate to have my parents be a part of it at this point in the girls' lives where they are still so young and easily excitable. Hopefully after this batch is released, we will have another opportunity to see another flock raised in the near future.
Your girls are just adorable - what a cool thing for your parents to do!
